Mrs. Melissa Newton » Bio

Mrs. Newton is the nurse at McDowell Academy for Innovation. She has been in McDowell County for 38 years and calls the mountains of WNC home. She graduated from McDowell Technical Community College with her Associate Degree in Nursing in 2003. She then furthered her education and obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from Winston Salem State University in 2006.

Mrs. Newton chose nursing during college because she likes to work with the public and likes taking care of people in as many ways as she can. She was inspired to study nursing when she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 19.  It was during her hospitalization that she realized that she wanted to help others learn to be healthy and nursing was a natural fit. Now she gets to take care of students every day at school and teach them healthy ways of living.

Mrs. Newton also has a life outside of school. In her free time, she likes going to church with her husband and children and has a strong faith.  She has volunteered on the Medical Team at her church for the past two years as well. Her favorite holiday is Christmas when she gets to spend time with her family.  She especially enjoys spending time with her daughter and son and reading books from the Harry Potter series. She also has two stepsons that are actively serving in the United States Air Force.  Her favorite movie is You’ve Got Mail.  She also has a musical side to her and learned to play the clarinet and piano.  Her favorite music to listen to is Christian music as well as country.

As you can see, Mrs. Newton has a passion to help students in many ways. When you are feeling under the weather, Mrs. Newton is the person to get you back on the mend.  We appreciate her drive and service at MAI, and consider her a valuable member of the family.
